I am working at home today. Rooney started asking to watch Mickey. With no episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubbouse on the DVR, I turned to YouTube. It turns out, there are hours of classic Disney shorts ready to stream. Here are some lessons learned during the 30min we watched together.
Mickey is a Trickster.
The tone of a short can swing wildly from one minute to the next. Rooney oscillates between wonder, boredom, and terror multiple times during a given cartoon.
So much racism.
Mickey's Surprise Party is sponsored content at its finest. Minnie really wants to impress Mickey with her cookies. But is monster dog, Fifi, ruines them. Mickey tells Minnie not to worry, is mother too was a terrible cook. He comes back later with a bag of Fig Newtons and Milk-Bones. The episode, of course was sponsored by The National Bisket National Biscuit Company (Nabisco). Native Advertisming and sponsored content are nothing new.
Also homophoic. Very homophobic.
