Lots of folks have got the Netflix/Comcast deal all wrong Dan Rayburn at StreamingMedia sets the record straight.
Commercial interconnect relationships, also referred to as paid peering agreements, have been around since the Internet started, and it’s how the Internet works. Commercial interconnect deals have NOTHING TO DO WITH NET NEUTRALITY. Implying otherwise shows a complete lack of regard in understanding how traffic is and has been exchanged across networks for the past twenty years.
We always are looking for a reason to hate Comcast—and the give them to us daily. But we will never be taken seriously in our pursuit of lasting Net Neutrality regulations if we cry wolf. Netflix has spend a decade building a network infrastructure to stream video into out home. This deal eliminates a step between them and us. It eliminates a partner who cannot keep up with the demand.
